Meant for the undergraduate students of civil engineering, this text on "Structural Analysis" has been updated with units in the SI system. It has been written in a clear lucid style which presents the complex concepts of matrix analysis in an easy-to-understand manner. Features It assumes only an elementary knowledge of structural mechanics, briefly but lucidly discusses fundamental concepts of structural analysis. A unique feature is the combined discussion of the two methods i.e. the force method and the displacement method for each category of structure. This enables their critical comparison and provides an understanding of their merits and demerits . Before discussing the matrix methods in detail, sufficient information on matrix algebra and a preview of the two main methods is given.

The second edition of the book was long overdue and is now presented incorporating the various changes required in the text matter in most of the chapters conforming to the revised Indian Standard Code IS : 456-2000. The new revised Indian Standard Code emphasizes the importance of Limit State Design Philosophy for reinforced concrete structures while the traditional working stress design is incorporated in the Annexure-B of the revised code. Consequently the design examples are presented according to the limit state design procedure enshrined in the code.Most of the chapters have been completely revised with examples based on the limit state design procedure. In addition the use of SP: 16 design charts and tables for rapid design of rein- forced concrete structures generally required in the design offices by structural engineers is also included in some of the typical design examples. The working drawings of the various structures conform to the detailing procedural outlined in the special publication SP:34 Hand Book on Concrete Reinforcement and Detailing Bureau of Indian Standard New Delhi. The decision of elevated water tanks presented in Chapter-6 conforms to the Indian Standard Code IS:3370 which prescribes the working stress design for the water retaining portion of the structure.
